Job Summary:
Reports to Wastewater Supervisor. May supervise other staff. Performs under minimum supervision to perform skilled and supervisory work in the safe and efficient operation of a wastewater treatment plant. This work requires knowledge of operating requirements and safety precautions of plant equipment; an ability to meet emergency conditions; considerable knowledge of laboratory testing techniques utilized in the performance of required tests associated with the operation of a wastewater treatment plant. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Job Functions shall include but are not limited to the following:
  • Assigns and supervises the work of a crew engaged in the operation and maintenance of a treatment plant and collection system.
  • Observes and checks motors, pumps, blowers, and other equipment for proper functioning.
  • Keeps track of operations at pumping stations; supervises the mixing of chemicals added to various types of treatment.
  • Follows strict routine and checklist for the proper operation of machinery, equipment, and disposition of chemicals.
  • Cleans and repairs sewers including sewer lines, pipes, manholes, intakes and related structures.
  • Gathers samples and runs basic tests in laboratory as required.
  • Keeps records and prepares reports on plant operations.
  • Will be available to respond in emergencies or unusual circumstances outside of normal assigned work periods.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City and OMWD policies and procedures.
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows OMWD safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning personal conduct, as outlined in the OMWD Employee Handbook.
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of sewer collection systems, manholes, pipes & fittings, flows, repairs & maintenance, and ability to detect flaws and defects in operation
  • Ability to lay out, supervise, and inspect work of skilled and semi-skilled plant operators.

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow simple oral and written instructions; and to understand and apply available guidelines to varied operational requirements.
  • Must undergo a pre-employment background investigation with satisfactory outcome.
Minimum Educational Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent and completion of a wastewater treatment operator’s course, and experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant facilities, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which would provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Required Special Qualifications:
  • Obtain and maintain a State of Iowa Wastewater Operator III License within eighteen (18) months from date of appointment, failure to do so will result in termination.
  • Must possess a valid Class A or B Iowa Commercial Driver License (CDL) including tanker and air bake endorsements with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Certified to use S.C.B.A. and to be trained regarding the Confined Space Safety Policy within ninety (90) day probation period.
  • CPR and First Aid Certified, if required by department safety coordinator.
Essential Physical Abilities:
  • Must be sighted.
  • Depth perception, peripheral vision, color vision, and hand/eye coordination necessary to safely operate equipment.
  • Must be able to hear normal conversation.
  • Must be able to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to speak clearly at normal rate of conversations with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Must be able to set up and down 12 to 18 inches into employer’s equipment.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk (sometimes on wet slippery, or uneven terrain) while performing job duties, sometimes for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to bend, crouch, crawl, kneel, squat, climb, jump, and walk.
  • Must be able to balance and turn body while performing job duties.
  • Must be able to push/pull equipment or material, throw, lift, and carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds, move barrels weighting up to five (500) pounds, with proper equipment.
  • Must be able to use hands to lift and grasp, to reach and work above shoulder level, and to turn both hands and wrists above the head. To use dexterity and coordination for operation of manual and power tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to move up and down ladders and stairs.
  • Regular and dependable attendance during assigned work schedule hours.
  • Following a conditional offer of employment, the OMWD reserves the right to require a physical examination by a physician of the OMWD’s choice, including drug profile screen, to determine if an applicant can perform the essential functions of this job description
Environmental Conditions:
  • Works in field environment.
  • Required to work for extended periods of time in hot/cold weather extremes; dry/dusty extremes; humid/wet extremes; dirty conditions; in possibly infectious environments.
  • Required to face exposures to hazardous environments of toxic and explosive gases and possess the ability to limit those exposures.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment, such as S.C.B.A., safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hat, and hearing protection
  • Required to change and operate valves of various sizes up to forty-eight (48) inches with differing degrees of resistance, both alone and with assistance.
  • Required to enter and work in confined spaces with entry space being as small as twenty-tow (22) inches using permanent or portable vertical ladders at a depth of up to forty (40) feet.
  • Required to operate in environments of excessive noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, and slippery surfaces.
  • Required to be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • Will operate a multitude of equipment with varying degrees of noise and vibration.
