The City of Sioux City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join their team! This person will perform technical laboratory work in the collection and analysis of samples and recording test results.

While the Laboratory Technician may work a typical Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. schedule, the position will require flexible schedules when necessary, including weekends, and holidays.

Our employees are required to reside within 10 miles of the City of Sioux City limits which extends to other states: Nebraska and South Dakota.

Duties
  • Performs simple or routine laboratory procedures such as sampling, weighing, recording, calibrations, pH, titrations, ion-selective electrodes, reagent preparation, etc.
  • Sets up, performs and cleans up after a variety of chemical and microbiological analyses.
  • Calculates and records laboratory data, enters data into computer and assists in preparation of periodic reports for plant management and regulatory agencies. Performs statistical calculations and tabulates data. Maintains records.
  • Analyzes chemical composition of samples.
  • Mixes and prepares chemicals and solutions.
  • Interprets test data and utilizes test data to identify problems within the various plant processes.
  • Performs quality control testing, analyzes and interprets quality control data.
  • Maintains, adjusts, cleans, and stores equipment according to specifications. Monitors equipment to insure proper working order; maintains inventory records of chemicals and supplies; recommends equipment, supplies and chemicals for purchase.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Qualifications

Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you, ability to see details at close range, ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Skill in planning, scheduling work.

Job Knowledge: General knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry as they apply to water and wastewater laboratory analyses; general knowledge of the operation and care of basic modern laboratory instruments and equipment; knowledge of basic math and simple algebra; general knowledge of computers, word processing and spreadsheet software. Ability to work safely with laboratory equipment and chemicals; ability to understand and to follow set procedures, instructions, and safety rules; ability to learn and to accurately perform a variety of laboratory analyses; must have a strong understanding of TSS, BOD, Ammonia Nitrogen, MLSS, RAS, WAS and pH; ability to understand and follow quality assurance protocols; ability to maintain accurate and legible records; ability to establish and maintain accurate and legible records; ability to safely handle laboratory equipment and delicate glassware and instruments; ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships; good physical condition.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal). Re-quires the ability to write and speak effectively with fellow employees, City officials, regulatory agencies, consultants, and the general public; read in English; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions. Requires the ability to work as a member of a team in order to accomplish tasks; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens/customers; superiors, other City employees, contractors, and vendors; and the ability to relate to minorities, women, and other protected classes in the community at all socioeconomic levels.

Physical Requirements: The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and smell. Ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing, ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with body, arms and/or legs.

Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment: Work is typically performed inside and includes being exposed to heat, noise, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, chemical hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system, confided spaces, and use of a respirator. Visits locations within the community whose environment may be different. Travel in all types of weather extremes to attend training and/or organizes meetings conferences, and workshops; must be mobile and able to visit businesses within the metro area.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must obtain a Treatment Grade 1 State of Iowa Wastewater System Certificate within 24 months of hire.

Required:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of college-level courses successfully completed in biology, chemistry, environmental science or related field
OR two years of responsible experience in a laboratory testing water or wastewater.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science or related field.

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities.
