The City of Ames is looking to place the right candidate into the Water Meter Supervisor position. Under the general supervision of the Water and Pollution Control Department Director, this position supervises the activities of the Water Meter Division, including the installation and maintenance of water meters and oversight of the backflow prevention program; performs related work as required.

Plans, schedules, inspects and directs all activities of the Water Meter Division; supervises installation, maintenance, and change-out of water meters; coordinates division projects and programs with other City departments and divisions as necessary, including leak detection, water conservation, and hydrant and main flushing. Receives, investigates, and resolves inquiries, and requests for service from the general public regarding high bills, water pressure, water quality, and related matters. Prepares annual divisional budget request; administers the adopted budget; maintains budgetary control; orders and maintains inventory of parts and supplies; reviews and modifies division work methods, practices, and procedures in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Selects, trains, evaluates, and disciplines division employees. Prepares periodic reports of division activities; maintains historical record of meter locations and maintenance; supervises the backflow prevention and cross-connection control program; engages with contractors and vendors; ensures division activities are performed in accordance with applicable codes.

Other Job Functions: Evaluates and makes recommendations to improve the efficiency of the division. Annually updates the Water Audit Report, following industry accepted standard procedures. Coordinates Meter Division activities with other divisions and departments, such as Utility Customer Service and Inspections. May at times represent the department on the City-wide Development Review Committee.

Education and Experience: Successful completion of high school, HiSet, or G.E.D.; and experience in at least one of the following areas:
  • Four years in a community water or wastewater utility.
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in installing residential, commercial, and/or industrial plumbing systems.
  • Four years of other closely related work experience.
Preferred (but not required) education and experience:
  • Possession of a four-year degree in business, management, public administration or a closely related field.
  • Experience in a water utility meter installation and repair program.
  • Supervisory experience.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver's license.
