Do you have keen Spidey-sense and an inquisitive nature? The City of Cedar Rapids is seeking an Operations Specialist for their drinking water treatment plants. This cross-functional, strategic role directly impacts the community in the support of the city’s commitment to provide safe, great tasting drinking water through establishment of and conformance to performance standards.
The Operations Specialist champions safety process improvement programs by collaborating with front line treatment plant operations and maintenance professionals. As the program administrator for plant Process Safety Management (PSM) they collaborate with internal staff and external experts to comply with regulatory requirements for chemical (chlorine) storage and work procedures. They work to benchmark critical processes in an effort to identify performance gaps in the operation. As a member of the leadership team in the water plant, the spectrum of work includes establishment of basic conditions, project management, plant trial execution (Plan, Do, Check, Act), direct communication/feedback to frontline operations and maintenance staff regarding process changes and deviations from basic conditions. Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies by communicating critical process parameters to front line staff. Strategically plan and execute plant trails in an effort to improve plant efficiencies and reduce operational expenses. Effective communication and influential leadership are essential to the role as the key driver of initiatives aimed at improving performance standards in the treatment plant and booster stations.
Position Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm
Salary: $62,233.60 annually to commensurate

Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or Chemistry and
- Three (3) to Five (5) years’ experience in water or wastewater treatment or water distribution or
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License
- Grade 3 Iowa Water Treatment Certification or Wastewater Treatment Certification
- Grade 4 Iowa Water Treatment Certification within one year of hire
- Grade 4 Iowa Water Distribution Certification within two years of hire
