The Dubuque Water Department is dedicated to producing and delivering drinking water that is in compliance with all state and federal drinking water standards. We continually strive to adopt new and better methods of delivering the best quality drinking water. The City of Dubuque’s distribution system is composed of 330.4 miles of water mains ranging from 4-inch to 30-inch diameter, 8,008 control valves, and 2,606 fire hydrants throughout the city. It is our goal to operate and maintain a water distribution system consistent with established procedures recognized by the American Water Works Association for efficient management practices.

If you are interested in being a part of a team doing meaningful work that supports your community, please join us! The City of Dubuque invites applications for the fulltime position of Water Plant Operator (DNR Grade: Entry 1 & 2).

The Water Plant Operator will perform technical work in a City-owned water treatment facility; and operate and control an entire treatment process, often through use of control boards, to transfer or treat water.

High school diploma or equivalent; one year or more on-the-job training as a building or mechanical trades apprentice; or any equivalent combination of experience and training is required.

Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid state driver’s license within 30 days after start date; possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a State of Iowa Department of Natural Resources Grade II Water Treatment License within 36 months after appointment is also required.
