Job Opening

Due to a retirement Ottumwa Water Works will have an opening for a certified Water Treatment Plant Operator Night shift 7pm to 7am. To be considered for the position, the applicant must currently possess a Grade II Water treatment operator’s license from the State of Iowa.

Starting Pay $24.43/hr

Operators work a 12-hour shift. Every other weekend off.
  • Must have and maintain a Valid Driver’s License from the State of Iowa, and a good driving record.
  • Must be willing and able to acquire and maintain a thorough knowledge of the SCADA system by knowing how the system operates. By knowing and watching the trendlines to know when problems are happening and when to request assistance. Willingness to learn to collect various distribution samples when needed to. Maintain compliance with all laws, regulations, and work rules.
  • Must be willing and able to acquire and maintain a thorough knowledge of the water treatment plant. The work involves responsibility for the operation of a surface water lime softening system.
  • Must be willing and able to perform general maintenance of equipment and laboratory instruments.
  • Must be willing and able to perform cleaning duties as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to perform considerable physical effort including lifting and carrying, bending, twisting, stooping. Kneeling, pulling, pushing, climbing, crawling squatting, reaching, use of fingers and hands, walking and standing for extended periods of time as well as sitting for extended periods of time. Coordination of eyes hands, legs and body is needed. Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly. Must be able to move 100 pounds repeatedly.
  • In emergencies, a water operator must be willing to work long hours, use sound judgement and apply practical solutions.
  • Work will be performed inside and outside both day and night, under varying and at times extreme weather conditions. Work includes exposure to every weather condition.
  • Work will include working nights, weekends and holidays and on-call responsibilities.
  • Must have correctable near and far vision, ability to hear, spell, speak and write. Work also includes the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Must have the ability to utilize technology i.e., computer, email, tablet, cellphone.
  • Must have the ability to pass a respirator medical examination
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test
  • Other duties as assigned.
